What limonene is

Limonene is common to the essential oils of lemons and other citrus fruit, and it is the second most widely distributed terpenoid in nature. Along with other terpenes it plays an important part in the aroma and flavour of food and drink.
It has more research behind it than most terpenes. Studies in mice suggest anti-anxiety effects, and a study of hospitalised patients with depression who were exposed to a citrus fragrance is often cited in support. That is a long way from showing that a limonene-rich strain will lift your mood, and research on how terpenes and cannabinoids interact in people is still at an early stage.
Limonene in our catalogue
3,102 published strains list limonene: 944 indica (30%), 1,855 hybrid (60%) and 303 sativa (10%), averaging 21.3% listed THC. The flavour notes they carry most often are earthy, sweet, fruity, pine and citrus.
Questions about limonene
Does limonene make you feel uplifted?
It is often described that way. Mouse studies suggest anti-anxiety effects, but how terpenes shape the effects of cannabis in people has not been established.
Where else is limonene found?
Most of all in lemons and other citrus fruit. It is the second most widely distributed terpenoid in nature.
Is limonene only in citrus-flavoured strains?
No. In our catalogue it is listed on most strains, including many whose main flavour notes are earthy or sweet.
Counts are computed from our published strain catalogue at page load. Terpene listings describe a cultivar’s reported profile rather than an assay of any particular batch. The idea that terpene content shapes the felt effects of cannabis, the “entourage effect”, remains unproven in people, and nothing here should be read as a medical claim. For adults 19+.
