Sour Diesel Strain — Sativa, 22% THC

What Sour Diesel Is

Sour Diesel is a sativa-leaning strain from the New York area in the early 1990s, and the plant that gave an entire flavour category its name. The sharp fuel-and-citrus profile that the industry now calls “gas” traces to this cut.

The Origin Is Openly Called a Legend

Unusually for a strain this important, the sources do not pretend to certainty. One guide describes the origin story plainly as urban legend.

What is broadly agreed: it descends from Chemdawg 91. What is not agreed is the other parent. Candidates include Super Skunk, Northern Lights and OG Kush. The most commonly repeated version has Chemdawg 91 accidentally pollinated in the collection of a New York grower known as AJ, by a DNL male in one telling, by a Super Skunk × Skunk #1 male in another.

A 2014 book about Robert Peace claims he created the strain deliberately. That is a biography rather than a breeding record. Some sources place the origin in California, which contradicts the New York attribution entirely.

Why the Uncertainty Persists

Chemdawg’s own lineage is only loosely documented, so Sour Diesel’s parentage rests on an already-uncertain foundation. This was material passed between growers before anyone was keeping records, and the people involved had reasons not to.

Potency

Around 22.5% THC in the figures most often cited, with Chemdawg-heritage material consistently testing above 20%. For context, its reported parents sit lower (Super Skunk around 16%, Chemdawg around 18%), which is normal for a selected cut.

Terpenes: Two Competing Profiles

One guide names terpinolene, ocimene and beta-caryophyllene as dominant. Others emphasise caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene, with limonene widely credited for the sour citrus note.

These are typical rather than fixed, and for a cut this widely propagated the profile shifts by grower.

Reported Effects

Fast, cerebral and energising: the strain most often reached for when the goal is to stay functional. These are reported impressions rather than guaranteed outcomes.

Why Sour Diesel Still Matters

It is the ancestor of a large part of the modern gas category. When a current strain is described as fuel-forward, the lineage usually runs back through Sour Diesel to Chemdawg, which is why a thirty-year-old cut still draws tens of thousands of searches a month.

Growing Sour Diesel

A demanding plant by every account. It stretches several times over during flower, so pruning, topping and training are not optional, and it is better suited to a greenhouse or outdoors where it has room.

Flowering is long: 10 to 11 weeks, with one cultivation trade source saying it wants at least 70 days indoors and many growers pushing past 80. Yields are rated moderate, improving if the stretch is controlled.

The smell is a genuine operational problem. Growers describe it as among the most pungent plants indoors, and the specific advice is that a single carbon filter is not enough. Trade guidance also warns against overfeeding, which produces loose airy buds, and recommends keeping late-flower temperatures below 78°F to preserve the terpenes and humidity under 60%.

What to Check When Buying

The sour citrus should arrive with the fuel, not be missing from it. Much of what is sold as Sour Diesel is a faster-flowering cross carrying the fuel without the sharp top note, understandable, given a true ten-to-eleven-week flower is expensive to run.

FAQ

What strains make Sour Diesel?
It descends from Chemdawg 91. The second parent is disputed — Super Skunk, Northern Lights and OG Kush are all proposed. The most repeated account is an accidental pollination in a New York grower’s collection.
Where did Sour Diesel come from?
Most accounts say the New York City area in the early 1990s, though some sources say California. One guide describes the origin story plainly as urban legend, which is unusually candid for a strain this well known.
How strong is Sour Diesel?
Around 22.5% THC in the most commonly cited figures, with Chemdawg-heritage material generally testing above 20%.
What are Sour Diesel’s dominant terpenes?
Sources give two profiles: terpinolene, ocimene and beta-caryophyllene in one; caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene in others. Limonene is widely credited with the sour citrus note.
Why is Sour Diesel’s lineage so uncertain?
Chemdawg’s own lineage is only loosely documented, so Sour Diesel rests on an uncertain foundation. This material passed between growers long before anyone kept breeding records.
What does Sour Diesel taste like?
Sharp fuel and sour citrus — the profile that gave the modern “gas” category its name.
