OG Kush Strain — Hybrid, 24% THC
What OG Kush Is
OG Kush is the strain modern American cannabis is largely built on. Wedding Cake, Gelato, GSC, Sour Diesel crosses and most of the West Coast catalogue trace back through it. It is also, after thirty years, a strain whose genetics nobody can state with confidence.
Nobody Agrees What OG Kush Is
The most widely supported account places it in Florida in the early 1990s, with a grower named Matt “Bubba” Berger crossing a mystery strain, believed to be Chemdawg, with Hindu Kush genetics. Josh D is credited with bringing it to Los Angeles and making it famous.
Some accounts add a Lemon Thai parent. A competing theory holds that OG Kush was never bred at all, and emerged from undocumented bag seed as a distinct phenotype of something else entirely.
Even the Name Is Contested
Three explanations circulate for what “OG” stands for:
| Original Gangster | The popular reading |
| Ocean Grown | A reference to coastal California cultivation |
| OverGrow | A defunct cannabis forum where the strain circulated |
The OverGrow explanation is the most interesting, because it would date the name to a specific online community rather than to folklore. None is settled.
Potency
Unusually consistent for a strain this disputed: sources agree on 20% to 25% THC. The genetics may be a mystery but the plant itself behaves predictably.
Terpenes and Aroma
Myrcene, limonene and beta-caryophyllene, producing the profile the industry calls “OG”: earth and pine with lemon and fuel over it. That combination is distinctive enough that it is used as a descriptor for other strains, which is a rare thing for a terpene profile to achieve.
Reported Effects
Weedmaps ranks relaxed, happy, giggly and euphoric as the most common, with focused, uplifted and creative also reported. Leafly’s reader data adds sleepy, and lists dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness as the negatives.
Descriptions converge on a calm euphoric lift that settles into body relaxation and grows heavier with dose. Leafly readers report using it for stress (38%), anxiety (30%) and pain (28%). That describes usage patterns, not clinical evidence, and Leafly says so itself.
Why the Lineage May Never Be Settled
No peer-reviewed genetic analysis of OG Kush appears in the public record, and the accounts that exist come mainly from seed sellers and retailers with a commercial interest in the story they tell. Treat the Chemdawg × Hindu Kush account as a plausible reconstruction rather than established fact, which is, notably, how the better sources treat it themselves.
Growing OG Kush
Rated difficult by the main consumer database, medium by seed sellers. Flowering is 7 to 9 weeks with moderate yields. Reported figures include 400–500 g/m² indoors.
The recurring problem is powdery mildew. Sources agree the dense buds are vulnerable, with one grower stating flatly that outdoors they have no mildew resistance at all. Pruning for canopy airflow is the standard mitigation, and dry conditions suit it best; high humidity in flower brings bud rot.
Much of the modern catalogue exists because breeders tried to keep the OG profile while removing exactly these problems, which is the practical reason so many strains descend from it.
What to Check When Buying
The signature is the combination rather than any single note: earth and pine with lemon over the top and fuel underneath. Material that is only fuel, or only pine, is usually a descendant rather than OG Kush itself. Given the genetics are unsettled, aroma is the most practical test available.
