Maui Wowie Strain — Sativa, 19% THC
What Maui Wowie Is
Maui Wowie is a Hawaiian sativa that rose to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and it is one of the few strains whose reputation predates the modern seed industry by decades. It is also sold as Maui Waui, Maui Wowee and “Maui pre-’72”: the same plant under names that reflect how long it has been passed around.
It is best known for a bright pineapple and tropical flavour and an energetic, clear-headed effect that users consistently describe as functional rather than overwhelming.
Where Maui Wowie Came From
Every account places its origin on Maui in the 1960s, grown as pakalōlō, the Hawaiian word for cannabis, long before anyone was selling seeds.
The strain reached the mainland through surf and counterculture networks, arriving in California in the early 1970s, with seeds circulating widely by the middle of that decade. From there collectors carried it to British Columbia and Europe, where breeders crossed the Hawaiian genetics with Afghani and Thai stock, which is part of why so much of what is sold as Maui Wowie today is not the original plant.
One widely repeated origin story describes a late-1960s solstice gathering in Lower Nāhiku on Maui, where visitors from the mainland are said to have reacted to the local crop with the exclamation that gave the strain its name. It appears in a single source and we would treat it as folklore rather than history, but it is the story the name carries.
Is Maui Wowie Actually a Landrace?
This is genuinely contested, and it matters, because “landrace” is the main thing the strain is sold on.
Some sources call it a pure Hawaiian landrace. Others describe it as a landrace crossed with an unidentified second strain. One names Hawaiian Skunk crossed with an unknown landrace. A more careful account calls it an heirloom rather than a landrace, likely assembled during the 1960s from Polynesian-grown lines and other Pacific introductions, rather than having evolved in isolation.
That last reading is the most plausible. Hawaii was a crossroads, not an isolated valley, and sixty years of informal propagation sit between the original plants and anything you can buy now. Treat “landrace” as a description of its era and origin rather than a claim about genetic purity.
Potency: An Unusually Wide Spread
Reported THC for Maui Wowie varies more than for almost any strain in this catalogue:
| Lab-tested flower, Mendocino grower | ~19% |
| Typical range, strain guides | 15–24% |
| Canadian producer listing | 28–34% |
| One user-submitted lab result | 14.7% |
The consumer databases decline to give a figure at all and rate it simply as higher THC than average. This listing uses 19%, which matches the tested flower figure rather than the marketing ones.
The spread is explained by what the name now covers. A 14.7% result and a 34% result are not the same plant; the high numbers almost certainly describe modern crosses sold under the old name. If the original Hawaiian character is what you want, a figure in the high teens to low twenties is the honest expectation.
Terpenes: Also Disputed
Four sources give four different dominant terpenes. One lists limonene, pinene and myrcene; another caryophyllene, myrcene and pinene; a grower lists myrcene with pinene and caryophyllene supporting; a terpene specialist argues terpinolene leads and ties that to the strain’s uplifting reputation.
Pinene appears in three of the four, more consistently than anything else, which fits the sharp, resinous edge under the fruit. Ratios shift by lab and phenotype, so no single profile is reliable for a strain this widely propagated.
Reported Effects
Here the sources finally agree. The consumer databases call the effects mostly energizing, and reported feelings cluster tightly: happy, uplifted, energetic, euphoric, focused and creative.
What comes up repeatedly in reviews is that the effect stays workable. One description puts it as cleaner and more functional than strains testing above 30%, which is the argument for an older, lower-potency cultivar in a market that has spent a decade chasing THC. These are reported impressions rather than guaranteed outcomes, and dose matters more than strain choice.
Aroma and Flavour
Pineapple and tropical fruit, consistently, across every source, with citrus and pine underneath. The pineapple note is the strain’s signature and the main reason it is still grown sixty years on.
Growing Maui Wowie
A photoperiod plant of moderate difficulty with medium yields. Its Hawaiian origin shows: it wants heat, humidity and a long season, which is why it has historically been easier outdoors in a warm climate than in a Canadian tent. Sativa-leaning structure means tall, open plants and a longer flowering period than most modern hybrids.
