In Canada a gram of flower runs roughly $4–6, an ounce $119–130, a quarter pound $238–450 and a pound $900–1,500, with price per gram falling by more than half as you move up the ladder. Below are current listed prices at every weight, the per-gram arithmetic worked out, and the thing almost nobody mentions: the industry weight ladder is about 1.2% lighter than the imperial weights it borrows its names from.

Key Takeaways

  • Price per gram falls steeply with weight. The same grade runs about $4.29/g by the ounce and $3.35/g by the pound.
  • Grade moves price as much as weight does. A AAA quarter pound and a AAAA quarter pound differ by $150 for identical mass.
  • The retail ladder is short. 28 g, 112 g and 448 g are each about 1.23% lighter than the true ounce, quarter pound and pound.
  • Popcorn is the cheapest real flower, about $2.01/g at the pound tier against $3.35/g for full-size AAAA.
  • Free shipping thresholds are part of the price. Most Canadian dispensaries ship free over $150.
  • Canada's public possession limit is 30 g dried. Bulk buying is for storage at home, not for carrying.

Weights, Gram to Pound

Cannabis is sold in imperial fractions and weighed in metric. The retail figures are rounded conventions, not conversions:

The Weights Are Short, By How Much

Every tier on the retail ladder is about 1.23% lighter than the imperial weight it is named after, and the shortfall is identical all the way up because the whole ladder is built from a 28 g "ounce" rather than a 28.3495 g one.

How short the retail weight ladder runs The retail ladder runs 1.23% light, at every tier Because the whole ladder is built from a 28 g ounce instead of 28.3495 g Ounce sold as 28 g · true 28.35 g −0.35 g Quarter pound sold as 112 g · true 113.40 g −1.40 g Pound sold as 448 g · true 453.59 g −5.59 g
A pound comes up 5.59 g short, roughly an eighth and a half of flower.

Why it matters: when you divide a pound price by 448 instead of 453.59, your per-gram figure comes out 1.23% lower than reality. Everyone quotes the retail convention, so comparisons stay fair. Just do not expect 453 g on the scale.

The Per-Gram Arithmetic

Two levers move your per-gram cost, and they are roughly equal in size.

Price per gram down the weight ladder Price per gram down the weight ladder Full-size AAAA flower, current Canadian listings Quarter: 7 g $5.71/g Half ounce: 14 g $4.57/g Ounce: 28 g $4.29/g Quarter pound: 112 g $4.02/g Half pound: 224 g $3.57/g Pound: 448 g $3.35/g
A 41% drop per gram from the quarter tier to the pound tier, at the same grade.
LeverFromToSaving
Weight: quarter to pound, same grade$5.71/g$3.35/g41% less
Grade: AAAA to AAA at the same quarter pound$4.02/g$2.68/g33% less
Both: quarter of AAAA to a pound of popcorn$5.71/g$2.01/g65% less

Which lever to pull depends on what you are optimising. If appearance matters, move up the weight ladder and keep the grade. If cost is the only thing that matters, popcorn at the pound tier is the cheapest real flower on the market.

Is $120 for a Quarter Pound Good?

It would be exceptionally cheap: cheap enough to check carefully. At $120 for 112 g you are paying $1.07 per gram. Nothing in the current Canadian listings above comes close: the cheapest quarter pound here is $238 (about $2.13/g) for mixed flower, and AAAA at that weight runs $450.

That does not make $1.07/g impossible: clearance, a mislabelled tier or genuinely low-grade material can all land there. It does mean the offer deserves the checks in the price-check section below before you commit, particularly on grade, actual weight and how recently it was packaged.

Why Price Per Gram Drops With Quantity

The per-gram discount at volume is not generosity. It reflects real cost structure:

  • Packaging and labour cost roughly the same per unit whether the unit is an eighth or a pound.
  • Shipping is close to flat per parcel, so it spreads thinner across more grams. Most Canadian dispensaries ship free above $150, which effectively removes it entirely at the bulk tiers.
  • Payment and handling fees are largely fixed per order.
  • Inventory risk shifts to you: the store converts stock to cash immediately instead of holding flower that degrades.

That last point is the one buyers underestimate. A bulk discount transfers the storage problem along with the flower, and badly stored flower loses value. See how long weed lasts and how to store it.

What Actually Drives the Price

FactorEffect on price
QuantityLargest single lever: up to about 41% per gram across the ladder
Quality gradeComparable in size, roughly a third between AAA and AAAA
Bud size (popcorn vs full-size)Substantial, and independent of grade
Legal vs illegal channelMeasurable difference in reported prices between the two[1]
ProvinceVaries: legal retail pricing differs by jurisdiction[2]
Strain or cultivarSmaller than most buyers assume at the same grade and weight

Note the last row. Within the same grade and weight tier, which strain you pick moves the price far less than any of the rows above it. Grade and quantity do the heavy lifting.

The 30 g Possession Limit

Canada's public possession limit is 30 grams of dried cannabis or equivalent, roughly one ounce.[4] Buying a pound is legal; carrying it around in public is not.

The limit applies to public possession, not to what you may keep at home, and provinces can add their own rules on top. If you buy at the bulk tiers, the practical consequence is that the flower stays stored and you carry out what you need.

How to Price-Check a Bulk Offer

  1. Divide by grams, always. Headline prices across different weights are not comparable; per-gram figures are.
  2. Confirm which weight convention is being used: 448 g or 453.59 g changes the per-gram figure by 1.23%.
  3. Check the grade and whether it is popcorn. A cheap quarter pound is usually cheap for a stated reason.
  4. Add shipping unless the order clears the free threshold, then recalculate per gram.
  5. Apply any coupon before comparing, not after.
  6. Ask when it was packaged. Price per gram means nothing if a third of it degrades before you use it.

FAQ

How much is an ounce of weed in Canada?
Currently around $119 to $130 for AAAA flower from Canadian online dispensaries, which works out to roughly $4.25 to $4.29 per gram. Lower grades and popcorn run considerably cheaper, and the per-gram price falls further at the quarter pound tier and above.
How much is a pound of weed in Canada?
About $1,500 for AAAA full-size flower, roughly $3.35 per gram across 448 g. A pound of AAAA popcorn runs about $900, or $2.01 per gram. A pound is legal to own but exceeds the 30 g public possession limit, so it is a storage purchase.
Is $120 for a quarter pound of weed good?
That works out to $1.07 per gram, which is well below anything currently listed: the cheapest quarter pound in our comparison is $238, or about $2.13 per gram. It is not impossible, but at that price check the grade, the actual weight and the packaging date before buying.
Why is weed cheaper in bulk?
Packaging, labour, payment fees and shipping are largely fixed per order rather than per gram, so they spread thinner across larger quantities. Bulk buying also transfers inventory risk from the retailer to you, which is only a saving if you store the flower properly.
How many grams are in a pound of weed?
448 grams at the retail convention of 16 ounces at 28 g each. A true imperial pound is 453.59 g, so the retail pound runs about 5.59 g, roughly 1.23%: light. Every tier on the ladder carries the same shortfall.
What is the cheapest way to buy weed in Canada?
Popcorn flower at the largest weight tier you can store properly. A pound of AAAA popcorn works out to about $2.01 per gram against $3.35 for full-size AAAA at the same weight, and about $5.71 for a quarter of AAAA.
Does strain affect the price of weed?
Less than most buyers expect. Within the same grade and weight tier, cultivar is a minor factor compared with quantity and grade, which each move per-gram cost by a third or more.
How much weed can you legally carry in Canada?
30 grams of dried cannabis, or the equivalent in another form, in public. There is no federal limit on what you may keep at home, though provinces may impose their own rules. Buying at bulk tiers is legal; carrying the whole amount in public is not.
