Sleepiness is a real, listed effect of cannabis: Health Canada names it among the short-term effects. Whether cannabis is good for sleep is a different question, and the research on that is early and mixed.

What the Sleepy Tag Means

The effects on our strain pages are what sources describe for each strain: a report, not a measurement or a promise. A strain tagged sleepy is one that people describe that way, and the same strain can feel different to different people, or to you on a different day.

What Health Canada Says

Health Canada lists sleepiness, or fatigue, among the short-term effects of cannabis.

What the Sleep Research Says

A 2017 review in Current Psychiatry Reports found research on cannabis and sleep still in its infancy, with mixed results. It reports that THC may shorten the time it takes to fall asleep but could impair sleep quality over the long term, and that early work suggests CBD may hold promise for insomnia.

Before You Choose by Effect

Strain type is not a shortcut either. The Ontario Cannabis Store notes that indica and sativa describe the plant, and that plant type may not be the most reliable indicator of potential effects; cannabinoid content, terpenes, consumption method, amount and your own tolerance all play a part.

How you take it changes when an effect arrives. Health Canada says smoking, vaping or dabbing can be felt within seconds to minutes, while eating or drinking cannabis takes 30 minutes to 2 hours, and effects from either can last up to 24 hours.

Sleepy in Our Catalogue

We publish 1,085 strains reported as sleepy, 30% of the catalogue, averaging 22.2% listed THC (99% indica, 1% hybrid and under 1% sativa). The terpenes listed on them most often are caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene. Their most common flavour notes are earthy, pine and woody. The other effects reported for them most often are relaxed, happy and euphoric. Effects and flavours are what sources report for a strain, not measurements.
