What a Tincture Is
Cannabis oil, or tincture, is cannabis extract mixed into a neutral oil such as sunflower, olive or MCT (medium-chain triglyceride, often made from coconut). It comes in a bottle with a dropper, a dosing syringe or a spray top, and it is meant to be taken by mouth, never vaped, dabbed or smoked.
Oils can carry THC, CBD or both, and some name a ratio: a "1:1" oil holds similar amounts of each. Full-spectrum oils keep a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes and taste stronger. Isolate and distillate oils are refined to specific cannabinoids and taste mostly of the carrier oil.
How to Take It
Shake the bottle, measure a dose with the dropper or syringe, and hold the oil under your tongue (sublingual) or inside your cheek (buccal) for 15 to 20 seconds before swallowing. That lets the cannabinoids absorb through the lining of your mouth. Oil can also be added to food or drink, though it then goes through digestion and may take longer to work.
Working Out a Dose
Labels give strength in milligrams per gram of oil. To estimate milligrams per millilitre, multiply by 0.93: a 15mg/g oil holds about 13.95mg of THC per millilitre. Health Canada suggests a first dose of 2.5mg of THC, or 0.2ml of oil, and waiting for the effects before taking more.

Tinctures and Timing: What to Watch
Oils are slower than smoking. Effects take 30 minutes to two hours to appear, typically peak around two hours, and can last up to 24 hours. Because the onset is slow, the risk is taking a second dose too soon. Store bottles where children and pets cannot reach them.
