What CBD Is
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the most common of the hundred or so cannabinoids found in hemp and many cannabis cultivars. It has little to no intoxicating effect, but it can still affect body and mind when consumed. In fresh cannabis it exists as CBDA; heating, drying or curing converts it to active CBD, which is why legal labels list both "CBD" and "Total CBD".
CBD and THC
Both act on the body's endocannabinoid system, but differently. THC temporarily stands in for the body's own endocannabinoids and binds to cannabinoid receptors, which is what produces a high. CBD is thought to work by blocking an enzyme that breaks down the body's own endocannabinoids, leaving more of them in circulation. The practical difference: CBD generally does not get you high.
CBD in Canada
In Canada, CBD is regulated as cannabis, a controlled substance, the same as THC. A Health Canada licence is required to produce and sell it, and legal products go through the same testing. Unlike THC, there is no legal limit on how much CBD a product can contain.

What the Research Shows
People attribute plenty to CBD: calmer moods, better sleep, soothed skin, eased pain. Not enough research has been done to back those claims, and more study is needed on how well it works, at what doses and over the long term. Clinical trials under way in Canada are looking at CBD for anxiety disorders, withdrawal from substance dependence, post-surgical pain, paediatric epilepsy, cancer-related symptoms, chronic headaches in adolescents, and pain from Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
Until those report, buy CBD for what it is: a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, and treat any product claiming to cure a condition with caution.
