Topicals are cannabis for the skin: balms, lotions, salves, bath salts, bath bombs and patches. They work where you put them, and most will not get you high, even with THC in them. Below: how topicals work, the kinds you will find, what the research says so far, and what they cost at the Canadian online dispensaries we track.

How Topicals Work

Applied to the skin, cannabinoids travel into the outer layers of skin rather than into the bloodstream. They are absorbed superficially, in amounts too small to reach the bloodstream in any significant quantity, which is why most topicals do not produce a high even when they contain THC. You may feel tingling or muscle relaxation instead.

The exception is transdermal products, such as patches, which are designed to absorb more deeply. Even so, because they still have to pass through layers of skin, a pronounced THC effect is unlikely.

The Kinds of Topicals

  • Balms: extract with carrier oils and waxes, solid at room temperature. CBD lip balm is one.
  • Salves: richer and more hydrating, often built on shea butter, coconut oil or beeswax.
  • Creams and lotions: for face and body.
  • Cooling gels, sticks and roll-ons: the cooling comes from added ingredients such as menthol or arnica, not from the cannabis.
  • Bath bombs, salts and soaks: dissolved in a warm bath.
  • Transdermal patches: built for deeper absorption and precise dosing.
  • Massage oils and lubricants.

What the Research Says

The evidence is early. Research has looked at CBD for wound healing, inflammation and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, with some promising results, but more human studies are needed. Studies of topical CBD for pain show promise in people with neuropathy and in former elite athletes. Treat any product claiming to cure a condition with caution.

Results also depend on your own body chemistry and the quality of the product.
