The Law in Canada
Health Canada is plain about it: the production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal in Canada unless authorized by Health Canada. There are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin, in Canada or anywhere else.
Legal access exists only through three routes: clinical trials, Health Canada's Special Access Program, and individual exemptions under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Mushroom products sold by online shops, including those listed here, are not part of any of them.
What Psilocybin Does
The active ingredients are psilocybin and psilocin. Health Canada says effects appear within 15 to 45 minutes and usually last four to six hours. They include distortions in the sense of reality, seeing and hearing things that are not there, and a raised heart rate and blood pressure. Effects vary from person to person, and the strength of mushrooms can vary greatly.
A 2025 review of clinical research reports that adverse effects are usually mild and temporary, most commonly nausea, anxiety, confusion, vomiting and headaches, with anxiety, paranoia and panic attacks more frequent at higher doses.

Risks: What to Watch
- Bad trips. Frightening experiences can happen, particularly at high doses, and may lead to risk-taking that causes injury or death.
- Look-alikes. Many mushroom species look alike, and people have eaten poisonous mushrooms mistaking them for magic mushrooms.
- Mixing. Using magic mushrooms with cannabis, alcohol, amphetamines or other substances raises the risk of serious side effects.
- Unknown strength. Potency varies greatly between mushrooms, and an unregulated product's label cannot be checked.
