What a Pre-Roll Is
A pre-roll is a cannabis joint a producer has already rolled or assembled, by hand or by machine, so you do not need flower, papers and filters of your own. They are usually sold in a small tube or box that keeps them from bending or breaking, in indica-dominant, sativa-dominant, hybrid and high-CBD versions. The common sizes are one gram and half a gram.
How Pre-Rolls Are Made
Producers start with either milled whole flower or trim and shake, from one strain or a blend; whole flower is considered to give a fuller flavour and more consistent effects. The flower is milled to an even particle size and the stems removed. A 2023 Canadian study found grind size changes the smoke: a fine grind of about 1mm took fewer puffs to finish, while a coarse grind of about 5mm burned with better airflow.
The ground flower goes into a paper cone with a filter, chosen from wood, hemp or organic papers and paperboard or cellulose filters, and is tamped to remove air pockets so it burns evenly. Filling can be done by hand, by a semi-automatic machine that fills many cones at once, or fully by machine. Each pre-roll is sealed with a twist or a dimple, then weighed and tested.
Infused Pre-Rolls and Blunts
An infused pre-roll adds a concentrate to the flower to raise its potency and boost its aroma and flavour. Distillate, THCA diamonds and liquid diamonds, kief, hash, live resin, live rosin and terp sauce are all used. The concentrate may be mixed evenly into the ground flower, layered inside the roll, or coated on the outside, kief being a common coating.
An infused blunt wraps infused flower in a blunt wrap, though not every blunt is infused.

How Strong Is an Infused Pre-Roll?
Much stronger than a plain one. BC Cannabis Stores puts traditional flower at roughly 1 to 30 per cent THC and many concentrates at roughly 80 to 100 per cent, so an infused pre-roll can feel much stronger even to experienced consumers. Its advice is to start low and go slow.
Reading the Label
Check the THC and CBD content on the label rather than going by the strain name. On legal products the label also carries the brand, a health warning, the lot number, and the packaging and expiry dates, in child-resistant packaging.
