What Live Resin Is
Live resin is a golden concentrate that ranges from thin and granular to thick and syrupy, depending on how it is made. It is known for a high concentration of terpenes and cannabinoids. It is a recent invention: the Ontario Cannabis Store describes it as invented less than a decade ago.
The "live" means the plant was fresh, not cured. The heat, oxygen and light of drying and curing can destroy many terpenes, so skipping that step keeps more of the plant's original aroma and flavour.
How Live Resin Is Made
Freshly harvested cannabis is frozen quickly, in a freezer or with dry ice or liquid nitrogen. A machine then runs a solvent such as butane or propane through the frozen plant, carrying the resin-filled trichomes with it. The solvent, the plant and the machinery are kept freezing cold throughout. Heat then drives the solvent off, leaving the oily resin.
Some producers finish it into textures that are easier to handle. Others let it settle, and it separates into crystals inside a sappy liquid: that is where diamonds and terp sauce come from.
Live Resin, Cured Resin, Shatter and Rosin
- Cured resin is made the same way from dried and cured cannabis, which changes its terpene profile. Live resin tends to taste richer and more complex.
- Shatter is solid and glass-like with fewer terpenes. Live resin is more aromatic and more liquid.
- Rosin is made without any solvent, by pressing flower or hash with heat. Live resin uses a solvent.

How People Use Live Resin
Live resin can be vaporized in a concentrate vaporizer, added to flower in a joint, or dabbed on a rig. It also turns up in vape cartridges. The Ontario Cannabis Store suggests starting with a pinch smaller than a lentil. Dabbing gives strong, immediate effects and is not recommended for anyone new to cannabis.
A note on the "entourage effect": some people hold that terpenes and cannabinoids work together to shape the effect. Beyond flavour and aroma, that has not yet been scientifically proven, so buy live resin for the taste.
