Hash Products
Hash is one of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate, with a history spanning thousands of years: the resin glands of the plant, gathered up and pressed into a block, a ball or strips. It is stronger than flower by weight and smells richer and earthier. Below: what hash is, how each kind is made, and what it costs per gram at the Canadian online dispensaries we track.
Hash Price per Gram Tool

At 112g, the best-value hash is Diamond Hash: $4.91/g (112g for $550.00) at Chronic Farms. Next: Red Dragon – Hash at $4.91/g, then Tesla Hash at $5.36/g.

What Hash Is
Hash, or hashish, is made from kief: the sticky, crystal-like heads of the trichomes, the tiny mushroom-shaped glands that cover a cannabis plant's buds and leaves. Those glands hold most of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes, so collecting them and leaving the plant behind is what makes hash a concentrate.
Because most of the leaf is gone, hash carries far less chlorophyll than flower. That is why it smells richer and earthier, with fewer of the fresh, grassy notes of a bud. Its colour depends on the plant and the method: anything from light golden amber to dark brown or black, sometimes with a hint of green.
How Hash Is Made
Every method does the same job, separating the resin heads from the plant, and they differ in how:
- By hand. The traditional way. Resin that builds up on the hands of people working the plants is rubbed and scraped off, then rolled into shape. Hand-rolled balls of hash are known as temple balls.
- By sifting. Dried buds are passed over a series of screens, each finer than the last, and the kief that falls through is gathered. Larger producers use tumblers fitted with screens, and some freeze the plant first, with ice or dry ice, so the glands snap off more cleanly. The sift is then pressed and heated into shape.
- With ice water. The newest method, which caught on in North America in the late 1990s. The plant is washed in ice water and the trichomes are strained out through screens, by hand or with a hash-washing machine. The result is bubble hash.
Pressing is what turns loose kief into hash. Heat and pressure rupture the resin glands, and a loose, sticky powder becomes a solid. A pressed brick is typically darker on the outside than within.
The Kinds of Hash You Will See
Pressed hash is what most people picture: refined kief compacted by hand, by a mechanical press or by a heated press into a cube, a ball or strips. Temple balls are pressed hash rolled by hand.
Powdered hash has not been pressed at all, and is usually sold as kief, sift or dry sift. We list it on its own page: kief.
Bubble hash is the ice-water kind, collected, dried and then pressed. It is graded on a six-star scale. The top grade, called full melt or six-star, melts away when heated rather than burning, which is where the name comes from.
Many listings carry a regional name: Moroccan, Afghan, Lebanese, Nepalese. Those are the classic hash-making countries. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's 2022 World Drug Report named Morocco the world's leading source of cannabis resin, with Afghanistan second, ahead of Pakistan and Lebanon.

How People Use Hash
In a joint or a pipe. A joint is the one way to use hash that needs no extra gear. Otherwise it takes an accessory: a pipe or a bong.
Vaporized. In a vaporizer made for concentrates, or a dry-herb vaporizer with a concentrate attachment. This avoids smoke altogether.
Dabbed. Ordinary pressed hash is generally not suited to dabbing. Full-melt bubble hash can be, but dabbing gives strong, immediate effects and is not recommended for anyone new to cannabis.
In food. Hash has to be heated before it will work in food. Heat converts THCA, the acid form found in the plant, into THC. That step is called decarboxylation, and without it the cannabinoids are far less intoxicating. Edibles take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin working and up to 4 hours to reach full effect, so wait before taking more.
Hash and Strength: What to Watch
Hash is several times stronger than flower. Washington State's cannabis regulator puts hash and kief at 50 to 80 per cent THC, against an average of 21 per cent for flower sold there in 2022. Health Canada lists hash among the extracts that carry a high concentration of THC, and advises new and occasional users to avoid them because higher THC means greater impairment and a higher risk of adverse effects.
It has also grown stronger over time. A 2020 University of Bath study of more than 80,000 samples, published in the journal Addiction, found that THC in cannabis resin rose by about 24 per cent between 1975 and 2017, while CBD levels did not rise to match.
The practical rule: use less hash than you would flower, and wait. Smoked or vaporized cannabis is felt within seconds to minutes, but the full effect can take up to 30 minutes to arrive.
