What Distillate Is
Distillate is cannabis resin refined by heating and condensing until a single compound is isolated, usually THC. The Ontario Cannabis Store describes the result as a concentrated form of cannabis; in practice it is a clear to amber oil, thick and slow-moving at room temperature.
Refining strips out nearly everything that is not a cannabinoid, including the terpenes that give flower its smell. That is why distillate has very little aroma or taste of its own, and why producers often add terpenes back in afterwards for flavour. If you want the plant's original aroma, live resin keeps far more of it, because the plants are frozen fresh rather than dried and cured.
How Distillate Is Made
Four steps, in order:
- Extraction. A solvent (ethanol, CO2 or a hydrocarbon) pulls the cannabinoids out of the plant. The crude oil that comes off is roughly 60 to 80 per cent cannabinoids and still carries waxes, lipids and chlorophyll.
- Winterization. The crude is chilled with ethanol so the fats and waxes solidify, then filtered out.
- Decarboxylation. Heat, around 220 °F, converts THCA into THC. Without this step the oil would not be intoxicating.
- Short path distillation. Vacuum and heat separate the remaining compounds by boiling point, usually over several passes. Sources describe purities of up to 99 per cent coming off this stage.
That last number is the whole point of distillate: it is the most concentrated, most consistent cannabis oil sold, and it is produced at industrial scale, which is what makes it cheap by the gram.

What People Do With Distillate
Vape carts and disposables. Most prefilled carts in Canada are distillate, sometimes with terpenes added back for flavour. A 510 thread cartridge is a glass tube of extract that screws onto a battery; the battery heats an atomizer inside it to make vapour.
Dabbing. Distillate can be dabbed or used in a concentrate vaporizer, though with the terpenes stripped out there is little flavour to enjoy.
Edibles and infusions. Because it is already decarboxylated, distillate can be stirred straight into butter, oil, honey or a recipe without any further heating. Sold-by-the-syringe distillate is popular for exactly this: it measures cleanly and tastes of almost nothing.
Topping a bowl or joint. A small amount added to flower raises the strength considerably.
Distillate and Strength: What to Watch
Health Canada describes extracts of this kind as among the strongest cannabis products sold, and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction notes that regular use of high-strength extracts raises your tolerance to THC. With a near-pure oil, the difference between a sensible dose and far too much is a very small amount of material.
If you are infusing food with it, start with a fraction of what looks reasonable and wait. Edibles can take up to two hours to begin working and up to four hours to peak, so there is a long window in which it is easy to take more than you meant to.
