THC distillate is cannabis oil refined until almost nothing is left but the cannabinoid. It is the cheapest potency per dollar on the market, which is why it fills most vape carts and most edibles. Below: what it is, how it is made, and what it actually costs per gram at the Canadian online dispensaries we track.

What Distillate Is

Distillate is cannabis resin refined by heating and condensing until a single compound is isolated, usually THC. The Ontario Cannabis Store describes the result as a concentrated form of cannabis; in practice it is a clear to amber oil, thick and slow-moving at room temperature.

Refining strips out nearly everything that is not a cannabinoid, including the terpenes that give flower its smell. That is why distillate has very little aroma or taste of its own, and why producers often add terpenes back in afterwards for flavour. If you want the plant's original aroma, live resin keeps far more of it, because the plants are frozen fresh rather than dried and cured.

How Distillate Is Made

Four steps, in order:

  1. Extraction. A solvent (ethanol, CO2 or a hydrocarbon) pulls the cannabinoids out of the plant. The crude oil that comes off is roughly 60 to 80 per cent cannabinoids and still carries waxes, lipids and chlorophyll.
  2. Winterization. The crude is chilled with ethanol so the fats and waxes solidify, then filtered out.
  3. Decarboxylation. Heat, around 220 °F, converts THCA into THC. Without this step the oil would not be intoxicating.
  4. Short path distillation. Vacuum and heat separate the remaining compounds by boiling point, usually over several passes. Sources describe purities of up to 99 per cent coming off this stage.

That last number is the whole point of distillate: it is the most concentrated, most consistent cannabis oil sold, and it is produced at industrial scale, which is what makes it cheap by the gram.

What People Do With Distillate

Vape carts and disposables. Most prefilled carts in Canada are distillate, sometimes with terpenes added back for flavour. A 510 thread cartridge is a glass tube of extract that screws onto a battery; the battery heats an atomizer inside it to make vapour.

Dabbing. Distillate can be dabbed or used in a concentrate vaporizer, though with the terpenes stripped out there is little flavour to enjoy.

Edibles and infusions. Because it is already decarboxylated, distillate can be stirred straight into butter, oil, honey or a recipe without any further heating. Sold-by-the-syringe distillate is popular for exactly this: it measures cleanly and tastes of almost nothing.

Topping a bowl or joint. A small amount added to flower raises the strength considerably.

Distillate and Strength: What to Watch

Health Canada describes extracts of this kind as among the strongest cannabis products sold, and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction notes that regular use of high-strength extracts raises your tolerance to THC. With a near-pure oil, the difference between a sensible dose and far too much is a very small amount of material.

If you are infusing food with it, start with a fraction of what looks reasonable and wait. Edibles can take up to two hours to begin working and up to four hours to peak, so there is a long window in which it is easy to take more than you meant to.

FAQ

How much does distillate cost in Canada?
Across the 148 distillate products we track, the median works out to $26 per gram at 1g and $6.03 per gram at 448g. The cheapest offer today is $4 per gram, buying 1000g for $4,000 at Bulkweedinbox.
Where is the cheapest place to buy distillate online in Canada?
Today the best value is at Bulkweedinbox, at $4 per gram. Chronic Farms lists the most distillate (82 offers). Prices move, so the tables on this page are rebuilt from the shops' own listings.
Is bulk distillate cheaper?
Yes. Buying 448g at a time averages 77% less per gram than buying 1g at a time. The saving only counts if you use it, so match the size to how much you actually get through.
What is THC distillate?
Cannabis oil refined by heating and condensing until almost nothing is left but the cannabinoid, usually THC. It is clear to amber, thick, and has very little smell or taste because the terpenes are stripped out during refining. Sources describe purities of up to 99 per cent.
How is distillate made?
Extraction with a solvent produces a crude oil that is roughly 60 to 80 per cent cannabinoids. Winterization chills it to remove fats and waxes, decarboxylation (around 220°F) converts THCA to THC, then short path distillation separates compounds by boiling point over several passes.
What is the difference between distillate and live resin?
Distillate is refined down to almost pure cannabinoid, so it has little aroma or flavour. Live resin is made from plants flash frozen after harvest, which keeps far more of the original terpenes, so it is more aromatic and usually costs more per gram.
Can you put distillate in edibles?
Yes. Distillate is already decarboxylated, so it can be mixed straight into butter, oil or a recipe with no further heating. Syringes are sold for this. Start low: edibles can take up to two hours to begin working and up to four to peak.
Is distillate legal in Canada?
Cannabis extracts are legal and regulated in Canada under the Cannabis Act. Licensed stores are held to limits on THC per package; products listed by online dispensaries often carry much more, so check the strength before you buy.
