Concentrates Products
Concentrates are cannabis with the plant taken away: the cannabinoids and terpenes, pulled out and gathered into something far stronger than flower. Hash, kief, shatter, budder, live resin, diamonds and distillate are all concentrates, made different ways and sold in different textures. Below: what each one is, how they are made, and what they cost per gram at the Canadian online dispensaries we track.

What Concentrates Are
Every concentrate starts the same way: isolating the cannabinoids and terpenes from the rest of the plant. What changes is the method, and the method decides the texture, the flavour and the name on the jar. The range keeps growing as producers experiment.
The reason people buy them is strength. Dried flower typically tests between 10 and 25 per cent THC. Concentrates commonly pass 50 per cent, and some reach 90 per cent or more.
The Main Kinds
- Kief: the loose, powdery trichomes sifted off dried flower. No solvent.
- Hash: kief pressed with heat and pressure into a brick or a ball. No solvent.
- Shatter: a hard, glass-like sheet made with butane.
- Budder, badder and wax: shatter's material whipped while it sets, for a softer texture.
- Live resin: made from fresh, frozen plants rather than dried ones, to keep the terpenes.
- Diamonds and terp sauce: what live resin separates into when it is left to rest, crystals at the bottom and a terpene-rich syrup on top.
- Distillate: oil refined until almost nothing is left but the cannabinoid.
Rosin is the other common type: an oil pressed out of flower with heat, again without solvents.
Solvent or Solventless
Kief, hash and rosin are made mechanically, by sifting, washing or pressing, so no solvent touches them. Shatter, wax, budder and live resin are made by running a solvent such as butane or propane through the plant and then driving it off with heat.
That last step matters. The Ontario Cannabis Store points out that buying from the legal market is what guarantees a concentrate carries no harmful leftover solvents; products from outside it are not held to that standard.

How People Use Concentrates
Most concentrates can be vaporized in a vaporizer made for concentrates (or one with a concentrate attachment), added to flower in a joint, or dabbed on a dab rig.
Dabbing means touching the concentrate to a very hot surface, called a nail, and inhaling the vapour. It is not recommended for anyone new to cannabis: it produces strong, immediate effects, and the risks named by the Ontario Cannabis Store include toxic psychosis, a sudden drop in blood pressure and acute impairment.
Concentrates and Strength: What to Watch
Start with a very small amount, especially with a product you have not tried, and wait at least two hours before taking more. How strongly and how long a concentrate affects you depends on your weight, sex, what you have eaten and your metabolism, so even experienced users should start low.
For scale: concentrates sold through Ontario's legal store that are meant to be inhaled can contain no more than 1,000mg of THC per package. Health Canada advises new and occasional users to avoid high-THC extracts altogether.
