What Budder Is
Budder starts the same way as shatter: butane strips the cannabinoids out of dried flower and is then evaporated away. Instead of leaving the extract to dry into a glassy sheet, the producer whips it, working air in for a creamier texture. The whipping may also drive off leftover traces of butane.
Budder, Badder and Wax
The names describe the texture that comes out:
- Budder is closer to frosting.
- Badder, sometimes spelled batter, is looser and more like a sauce.
- Wax typically has a thick, honey-like feel.
Choosing between them is mostly personal preference. People who dab often find soft budder and wax easier to handle than shatter, which can be brittle. And despite the reputation, shatter and wax commonly have comparable THC levels.

How People Use Budder
Budder is dabbed, vaporized in a concentrate vaporizer, or added to flower in a joint. Its pliable texture can make it easier to handle than brittle shatter, but dabbing gives strong, immediate effects and is not recommended for anyone new to cannabis.
Budder and Strength: What to Watch
Washington State's cannabis regulator puts concentrates such as wax and shatter at 60 to 90 per cent THC, against an average of 21 per cent for flower. Health Canada lists wax among the extracts with a high concentration of THC. Start with a very small amount and wait at least two hours before taking more.
